Meet Kiniage

One minute to see how it works.

How it works

From a shoebox of photos to your family's story.

1

Everyone gets a shoebox

Each family member has their own private space for their photos — from a phone, a computer, or scans of old prints.

2

Names find their places

Tag someone in a photo and they're linked to their place on the family tree. Type or paste a whole list of names at once and Kiniage matches each one.

3

Kin helps with the story

Kin helps you describe your photos: it asks a few questions about a group of similar photos, then drafts a description for each one. You confirm or change every word.

4

Share only with family you choose

Choose which photos to share, and with whom. The Family Shoebox is everything your family has chosen to share with each other.

Why Kiniage

Built to be passed down.

Photos and family tree, together

Every name on the tree brings its photos to life. Your family's story, connected. Married? Be in your family and your spouse's too, on one membership.

Private by design

No public profiles, feeds or search listings. Sharing is only with the family members you choose. Asking relatives about one photo? Your question link shows no photo and no question until they sign in as part of your family, and you can close it any time.

Yours to keep

Your originals stay untouched. Download everything, any time, in standard formats. Kiniage never sells your photos or your information.

AI that's optional

Kin does the busywork if you want it to. Prefer to do it yourself? Switch Kin off: everything Kin does has a do-it-yourself way.

Our promise

Your family's memories are your family's alone.

  • • Nothing is ever public — sharing is only with family members you choose.
  • • Your family owns its data. Download all of it, any time, in standard formats.
  • • Your original photos are stored unchanged unless you choose to replace one with an edit.
  • • We don't sell your photos or your personal information.
  • • Your data is encrypted, both in transit and at rest.
  • • Your photos are stored in the United States and Canada for now, until they move to storage in the United States. Everything else about your family stays in the United States.

Questions

Common questions

What is Kiniage?

A private home for your family's photos and family tree. Kiniage keeps them together as one living record, to enjoy now and pass down.

How much will it cost?

Every new member gets a 14-day free trial of the membership, with no card needed to start. After that, the membership price is $10 a month or $100 a year. One membership covers every family you're in; storage is per person. If you have a separate promo code, you can enter it when you sign up, or later in Billing during your free trial. Some options cost extra for everyone, even during the free trial: storage above the included 25 GB, and Kiniage Tokens, which pay for things like photo restoration (new members get a few free tokens to try the features that use them). You can switch between monthly and yearly or cancel any time. A member can add a partner-member for $5 a month, or $50 a year on a yearly plan, and a partner-member's first 30 days are free.

Who can see my photos?

Only you, and the family members you choose to share with. Nobody outside your family can browse or search your photos, and search engines can't see them. They're encrypted when they travel and when they're stored. We use them only to run Kiniage for you: to keep them safe, to do what you ask, and as the law requires. We never sell them or use them for advertising.

Is Kiniage available now?

Yes, as a beta: join, start your family, add and share photos, and help us make it better with your feedback. While it's in beta, upload copies only and keep your original photos on your own computer, or wherever else you keep them. Every price is shown before you pay. Kiniage is for adults 18 or older.

Can I be in two families?

Yes. One account can belong to more than one family, for example your own family and your spouse's. When someone in another family invites you, choose "Join as well" and you stay in yours. The Family page, Family Shoebox and Family Tree show which family you're looking at; switch with "Choose your family" at the top of the Family page. Your shoebox is the same in every family, because your photos are yours, and you choose who sees each one. Each family keeps its own tree, Family Shoebox and chat. One membership covers all your families. Leaving one family keeps the others.

Do I own my photos, and will you sell my data?

Yes, you own them, and no, we never sell your data. Your photos and your information are yours. You can download everything at any time in standard formats, and your original photos are stored unchanged unless you choose to replace one with an edit. Only what you share can be seen by others.

What does Kin, the assistant, do?

Kin is an optional AI assistant. Inside Kiniage, Kin can help you with questions, such as how to do something. It can help you describe your photos, suggesting descriptions for one or many photos at a time, help make albums based on your descriptions, submit a feature request, report a bug, and more. Kin can't tell who someone is on its own; names come from the people you tag. You confirm every description and album, and nothing is saved until you do. Kin's Magic Workshop is paid with tokens: 1 token for every 10 photos described, 10 for an album, always shown before it starts. Kin's sole purpose is to help you and your family.

Can I bring old printed or damaged photos?

Yes. Upload scans you already have. For scans of old, worn, faded or damaged photos, Kiniage's photo restore can bring them back to life: the optional AI feature "Restore this photo" creates a cleaned-up copy. Made by AI, the copy can change details; your original is never changed. The copy is labeled "Restored", and one tap switches back. A restore costs a few tokens, always shown before you press the button.

Where is my data stored?

Your photos are stored in the United States and Canada for now, until they move to storage in the United States. Everything else about your family stays in the United States.

How does the family tree work?

Your photos and the relationships you add build the family tree. Names find their place, and the tree fills with pictures. A family admin can also bring in a tree you keep elsewhere: a GEDCOM file from Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage and most genealogy programs, or a Gramps export. Not every name is family. When you tag a friend, a pet or something like a statue, choose Friend, Pet or Other. They stay off the tree, but you can still search for them, so you can always find those photos.

Do I have to use AI?

No. AI is optional, with two switches in Settings. "Kin, the AI assistant" can be switched off, and everything Kin helps with has a do-it-yourself way. "AI photo restore" is its own switch; a restore has no version without AI, so with it off no new restores are made.

Is my account protected?

Yes. Every member signs in in two steps: a passkey (your face, fingerprint or phone PIN), or your password plus a code from an authenticator app. For the most sensitive steps, like downloading everything, Kiniage asks you to confirm it's you again.

How much storage do I get?

The membership includes 25 GB of photos, which is thousands of pictures for most members. Above that, each extra 100 GB, or part of it, is $10 a month ($100 a year on a yearly plan), added to your membership bill and charged to the card you saved with Kiniage. A new block of extra storage is added to your next regular bill. Storage charges aren't refunded; a lower amount applies from your next billing date. Extra storage is added only when you agree: before an upload goes past what you have, Kiniage asks first, and if you say "Not now" the photos that would go past it aren't added. Nothing is ever deleted for size, and the Billing page shows how much you use. Free days (the trial or a promo code) cover the base membership only, which includes 25 GB of storage. Any extra storage needs a card and is billed from the start.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in your phone's web browser, and you can add Kiniage to your home screen so it opens like an app and can send you notifications. Dedicated store apps may come later.

Can I give Kiniage to someone or pay for a relative?

Yes, two ways. With a gift membership (no account needed, at kiniage.com/gift-membership): 3 months $30, 6 months $60 or 1 year $100. We email a one-time code, the time starts when it's redeemed, and it has no expiration date. Or you can sponsor a relative in your family: you pay their membership on your bill and can stop any time. You can also gift Kiniage Tokens you've bought to any other Kiniage member in your family.

What happens if I cancel?

You can cancel any time, and your membership runs until the end of the period you paid for, then doesn't renew. After it ends, your account is kept with limited access for 90 days, then it's deleted, and we email you 14 days before; starting your membership again within the 90 days keeps everything. Until then you can download all of your photos and information at any time, in standard formats, including before you cancel.

How do I see my relative's family tree or photos?

Every Kiniage family is private, so nobody can browse into it from outside, or as a member not yet in the family. Ask your relative to invite you from the Family page; they'll need your Kiniage code. Once you accept, you'll see what the family shares.

Can family members tag me in photos without asking?

You decide. Each member chooses, in each family, who can tag them in photos. You can choose: "Yes, anyone in the family", "Ask me first" (when someone else tags you, it waits until you say if it's OK or not before anyone else can see you as tagged), or "Only me". Kiniage asks when you join, and you can change it any time in Settings. You can also see the tags already on you, and remove any of them or all of them at once. Removing a tag takes only your name off that photo; the photo stays.

Can relatives without an account help identify a photo?

Yes, once they join. On a photo, tap "Ask someone who isn't on Kiniage (send a link)", type your question and send the link. Until they create an account and join your family (a family admin approves if you're not one), the link shows no photo and no question, because family photos stay private to the family. Once they're in, the photo opens to your question and they can answer. The link works for 14 days.

What does a family admin do?

Whoever starts a family is its admin, and can make other members admins. Each admin first agrees to a short statement. Admins decide who joins and what happens in the family. Kiniage doesn't check whether people are related, and isn't responsible for what admins decide. An admin can remove a member, who gets a kind notice and can send the admins one message. An admin can also keep someone from coming back. Removing someone can't call back copies they already downloaded. New members see everything right away, but for their first 7 days they can't download other people's photos or the family tree. A family can have as many members as it likes. Any member can invite relatives, and an admin approves each one. See the Terms of Service for the full details.

Can I edit photos in Kiniage?

Yes, the basics. You can crop, straighten and brighten your photos, and an Auto-fix button fixes the light. Your edit is saved as a separate copy. You can go back to the original or delete the edit at any time. If you prefer, "Keep only the edited copy" replaces the original with the edit. The original then waits 30 days in Recently deleted, where you can still put it back. There are no filters, stickers or beauty effects. Kiniage is for keeping family photos true to life.

Can I say where a photo was taken?

Yes. Make a place once, like a home named for who lived there, the town, even rooms if you like, and tag photos with it, just like tagging people. On a photo's page, the "Where was it taken?" box finds your saved places as you type. Your family sees the place's name and town on photos you share with them. Street addresses are optional and stay private to you unless you choose to show them.

Where can I read the Terms and the Privacy Policy?

The current versions are linked at the bottom of this page. Beta testers agree to the Terms and the Privacy Policy when they join.
